M10 Tank Destroyer

This mass produced tank destroyer was officially known as the “3-inch Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) M10”.  It is similar in size and shape to the better known M4 Sherman Tank, in part because it was built from the same basic platform.

The Liebster Award!

So I’ve been nominated for a Liebster Award by my fellow blogger at Amateur Airplanes.  This is an unofficial recognition passed between bloggers to acknowledge favorite sites with small readership.  So it is an honor indeed to be recognized by fellow writers for doing something they can appreciate.liebster-award-source-strawmarysmith

How Sure are You?

The Value of a Claim and Combat Intelligence

In a swirling, twisting dogfight a highly trained but inexperienced fighter pilot gets his first shot at an enemy aircraft.  He fires, and after seeing a burst of smoke the unfortunate target snaps out of control and plummets towards the Earth.

The excited pilot gets home and reports his success.  How sure should we be things happened like the pilot saw?  How sure are we he destroyed the target he just claimed?

Join me for brief look at accuracy and reliability of claims during World War II. Continue reading

Programming Note

It is official, my posts have now caught up to my finished models.

The “on my workbench” widget at right could be thought of as “coming attractions”. But it offers no information about how long things may take.  I put this notice up because there is no way anything will be done next week.  The Wildcat will probably done first, maybe in two weeks.

I’ve got one statistical tidbit for you guys.  By far, really by far the most popular post I’ve written was Brewster Buffalo Part II.  I’d say check it out, but the numbers look like everyone already has (!). It has more than twice the hits of any other post I’ve done.  I suspect its real popularity lies in having no pictures of anything built by me.  That, or my Finland readership is just really strong.  Actually that may be serious.  That post includes many excellent photos of a salvaged Buffalo currently on display at the Central Finland Aviation Museum.

I do have ideas for several articles I would like to write.  Including one on accuracy of shooting and validity of claims.  Funny we got into a long talk about that a couple weeks ago on my Sturmovik post, I’ve had that on my planning list for two years.  So maybe now is a good time to get some other things written…   and more models built!

Lockheed P-38E Lightning

The P-38 Lightning was the best American Fighter in the early part of 1943.  With high speed and long range it could be very effective when used by pilots well familiar with its capabilities.  But its complexity and maintenance needs made it difficult to deploy forward until infrastructure was well developed.

After the jump, join me a look at one of the first P-38s assigned to a war zone. Continue reading
